I’m trying to be the man you need.” I shook my head, crossing my arms over my chest. “You don’t get it, do you? It’s not about what you’re doing now. It’s about what you didn’t do when it mattered. Chad didn’t need to try. He just was. He was everything you’re not.” Lucian’s breath hitched, his shoulders slumping further. For a moment, he looked utterly broken, the proud Alpha King reduced to a man begging for scraps of hope. “Tell me how to fix it,” he pleaded. “Tell me what I can do to make this right.”

I’m sure we have a lot of things we need to discuss, sister dearest.” I returned her glare with a heated stare of my own and when I turned back to Lucian, he has completely retreated into himself with his head bowed, seemingly oblivious to the fact that we were even still in the room. He feels a million miles away, trapped in a house of mirrors built by the woman he’d mourned and the man who’d killed her. And with one last aching look, I turned away from the man I wanted to hold and walked toward the door, Maya trailing behind me like a punishing shadow.
