“Just here. Just now. Stand with me one more time.” The hum beneath her feet strengthened. Shallow cracks spidered out from the base of the leaning stone—old fault lines shifting. Snow along the border jumped as the ground trembled. The Bloodfang’s paws spread instinctively to balance. His eyes went wide. Wind coiled tighter around Luna. She lifted one hand slowly, palm facing out. A faint, pale light arced between her fingertips in thin, dancing strands—tiny lightning that snapped and hissed quietly. Not enough to burn fur and flesh.

Wren cleaned her bloody mouth, her chest raised and lowered, blood and sweat covering most of her forehead down to her face, Luna watched also roughly in the same condition as Wren. “I made it clear, didn’t I, I’m not leaving here without taking you with me, what has gotten into you, Luna?!” Luna fidgeted as her name was yelled by Wren. She seemed confused, consciously knew the kick was definitely meant to knock her out. Luna leaned backwards as though she was frightened or being possessed, rubbing and hitting her head as though she wanted to be free from something. Wren left an exhaled as she watched Luna vigorously hitting herself.

Shadows rushed forth, figures flooding into their world, moving like smoke. They came out one by one into the moonlight, revealing themselves to be grotesqueries the likes of which Jessica had never before seen. Half something she had never seen before in a man and half wolf, eyes glowing with an unnatural light, growls prickling her skin. “Is this your reinforcements?” His disbelief crept into his voice. “No,” Selene said, her tone smug. “These are your reinforcements. The elder, who’d been lurking in the shadows, edged forward, his eyes wide with awe and terror. “She’s stirring up some ancient … something,” he hissed, and his voice trembled. “The lunar power … it’s greater than we thought.”

I even tied everything together by pushing play on the Bluetooth mp3 I had in the car, and it filled the night air with elegant music.
