A little while later, Wendy reappeared wearing a pristine white princess dress, freshly changed and freshly scolded. — She scanned the room, saw her brother chatting with guests, and then spotted Daniel. Her eyes lit up like she had just seen the male lead of her favorite drama. Without hesitation, she grabbed a glass of red wine from a passing waiter and downed it in one breath. She had clearly forgotten her mother’s warning. Then she walked toward Daniel with what she thought was elegance. Her cheeks were flushed, her smile bright. “Hi,” she said sweetly. “I’m Wendy Gold. Little booths, red vinyl, that smell of coffee and fried food hanging in the air. We slid into a booth by the window. Wendy pulled her sleeves over her hands. Her eyes scanned the menu even though I knew she was just gonna order coffee. A waitress showed up, looking half awake. “What can I get you?” “Coffee,” Wendy said. “Same,” I said. “And pancakes.” Wendy raised an eyebrow. “Pancakes?” “Yeah.” “You eat pancakes?” “Don’t sound so surprised.” She smirked. “We’ll see.”

There was a burst of laughter. Wendy looked at Philip. This ordinary young man was very audacious. “You want me to apologize to a piece of trash at the bottom of the society? Who do you think I am? Let me tell you, I, Wendy Jones, am the leading best actress in the industry and also the madam of the Wes family. Who are you to make me apologize to you?” Wherever Wendy went, she would announce herself as the best actress and the madam of the Wes family.

"This kindergarten is huge! I've been searching everywhere for you two." She'd come today just to cheer Matty on. Lately, she'd been hanging around Sharon's place a lot, mostly for the free meals—and in the process, had gotten close to Matty. Matty's eyes lit up the moment he saw her. "Wendy! You came!" Wendy held up the camera in her hand and gave it a playful shake. "Of course I did. I'm here to capture the moment you make history and win first place!"

'W-what' Wendy didn't understand. 'We heard you all night, all morning and in the dining. Not I would blame you. You are in the honeymoon phase. Enjoy.' The woman winked at her and Wendy could feel blood rush up to her cheeks.

As the car pulled away from the civil affairs office, Wendy leaned against the window and watched as the scenery outside the window stream by. She thought she would cry, but her eyes were dry. Not a single tear came. “Hungry?” Madeline Lane asked from the driver’s seat, glancing at her. “Want to grab something to eat first?” Wendy shook her head. Her fingers unconsciously traced the faint ring mark on her ring finger. The skin there was slightly paler than the rest, as though the mark would never fade.

Wendy wasn't going to let Benedict get in the way of progress. Yet, when Wendy returned to Texas, she barely let an hour pass.
