Miko entered the building, eyes and mind wide open. She polished off her takoyaki as she stepped onto the spiral ramp headed downwards. As she descended, she saw the wide open hackerspace before her. It was roughly 40 meters high, and had a handful of mecha stations in each of its four corners. And in each of those stations was a fairly basic mecha. Most of them had civilian-type mecha in them. Two were industrial heavy lifters, another an outdated construction model, and the last was a disarmed and muzzled military combatant.

Nicky lowered his head, avoiding my gaze. I gave them one look, coldly laughed, and said nothing more. Turning to the equipment, I addressed Arthur. "Arthur, I've reviewed the device. The error code is E-047, likely a sensor module issue. But I checked the sensor itself—it's intact. The problem may be in the control circuitry." Arthur nodded, stepped forward, and opened the device casing to inspect it. I stood beside him, pulling up the data logs from the past few days. I spoke as I scrolled through them.

Miles of copper pneumatic tubes snaked across the ceiling like the veins of a titan.

The peela insect in his brain certainly kept him passive and obedient. "As soon as the chains are removed, I'll attack. I can fight the peela." The airnot returned with a ten-foot-tall square machine rolling behind him. The trash collector scooted on large castors and stopped outside the fabric selling stall. A tiny green box to the side of the machine blinked the price of burning the garbage. He sighed. They were the garbage. Their alien master tossed the cloth door aside as his puffy red lips smiled in a slow twist of satisfaction. Varnas waved the machine toward their cages. Their death rolled closer, inch by inch.

He pointed upward. "The ledger is merely the key." --- Ethan followed his gaze. Above the chamber, suspended beneath the domed ceiling, hung an immense mechanical structure. Hundreds of gears. Rotating drums. Optical readers. Miles of wiring added over decades. A machine that had evolved with each generation instead of being replaced. It wasn't modern. It wasn't obsolete. It was both. "What is it?" Dani whispered. Victor answered with unexpected reverence. "The Memory Engine." --- Julian frowned.

Then, there was only the oppressive, suffocating silence of a dead ship. Elara scrambled up the primary access ladder from the subdeck, her breath tearing through her throat in ragged gasps. The ship felt fundamentally different beneath her boots. The pervasive, low-frequency hum of the Everywhere Machine—the ever-present vibration of the AI coursing through the bulkheads—was gone. The terrifying, hollow stillness of a derelict vessel had replaced it. Emergency amber strips flickered weakly along the floorboards, casting long, erratic shadows as she sprinted through the primary airlock and into the ruined engineering bay.
