“That sounds… scary.” “It’s not,” I tried to reassure her. “It’s a gift. It makes us who we are.” She nodded slowly. “Okay.” I kept talking. “We also have mates. Like soulmates. The person who is made for us. The one we are bonded to forever.” “Me and you?” she asked. “Yes,” I laughed hard. I don't know why but I just felt like doing so. “You’re my mate. Marissa smiled, “When a dragon turns 100, they can find their mate. So, it’s a ball to show off Princess Adleigh becoming of age.” Jenna smiled, “Oh okay..and what’s a mate?” she hesitated to ask. Marissa laughed, “Dragons, werewolves, mermaids, and a few others have mates. A mate is a person who was made for you. You can feel it. It's like a pull. You are their home, their safe place. It's marvelous.” Jenna sighed, “That sounds wonderful. My timeline doesn’t have anything like that. If you like someone enough, you get married and start a life, but no one is made for each other.”

Everyone around me seemed to be finding their mates. “Congratulations!” I shouted as though they would hear me. I was losing my vibes and I needed it back.

You agreed to marry me so clearly you believed that this marriage would be advantageous to you also. You had your selfish interests too" he said stiffly and she winced. "Don't put it all on me". They were as good as strangers who had been forced into a marriage that they both couldn’t walk away from. So, no matter how unhappy they were or would be in the marriage, the only thing that could separate them was death and neither wanted to die soon so they’d just have to manage.
