~ Helena ~ I read my mother’s message. I wondered if something had happened at home since my mom rarely texted me. “I need to call my mother. I’ll be right back,” I said to Stacy. “Sure. No worries.” Then I walked to the garden. After taking a seat, I called to my mother, “Mom, what happened?” “Oh, sweetheart, it’s bad!” “What happened? Are you okay?” “I’m okay. I’m just furious.” My mom blew some air. “Kenneth just came here.”

It was one of her comfort potions whenever she had dysmenorrhea, or whenever she was stressed. "Mom, you do realize that I'm already a family man now, right?" Ira chuckled, yanking his mother's hand away from his face. "Please stop squeezing my cheek as if I'm still your five-year-old errand boy." "I know, I know," said Helena, tapping his jaw gently. "Nice to see you again, Miguel," his father greeted him, too. That was the latter's pet name for Ira. "Hey, dad. I'm sorry we came late for the family breakfast."

I forced a smile and replied, "Oh, sweetie, it's complicated. Mama just wants to keep you safe, that's all." Kiara, always the curious one, piped up, "But why, Mama? What's going on? Why can't we play with Uncle Conan anymore?" She demanded an answer. I took a deep breath, trying to find the right words to explain without revealing too much. I hesitated, then said, "There are some things that Mama needs to sort out, my love. It's nothing for you to worry about. Just trust Mama, okay?" I said, thinking it was over, not knowing that it was just the beginning.

"Hindi ko alam. Hindi ko rin tanda kung may nasabi siya sa 'kin about sa mommy niya. Basta ang alam ko lang ay patay na ang mommy niya."

You know what I was too? Fucking pissed. "Mama, what is it at all that you wanted to tell me that couldn't wait till morning?" I angrily asked sitting up and reaching for a pillow so I could hug it. She plopped down on my bed, an expressive look in her eyes. Mama's eyes were blue like mine even though we were black, a condition called Waardenburg Syndrome. She cleared her throat noisily and that apparently drove me up the wall. "Oh, get on with it already mama." I snapped at her angrily. She'd have usually gone all defensive on my ass but it was like she could tell I was extremely upset.

"MA, WHAT IS LOVE?" Napatingin agad sa akin si Mama, nakakunot ang noo. "Matti, where did you get that question?" Although she looked back at her papers, I know her attention is on me. "Is that your assignment, Matti?" "Hindi po."
