I’m just furious.” My mom blew some air. “Kenneth just came here.”

I forced a smile and replied, "Oh, sweetie, it's complicated. Mama just wants to keep you safe, that's all." Kiara, always the curious one, piped up, "But why, Mama? What's going on? Why can't we play with Uncle Conan anymore?" She demanded an answer. I took a deep breath, trying to find the right words to explain without revealing too much. I hesitated, then said, "There are some things that Mama needs to sort out, my love. It's nothing for you to worry about. Just trust Mama, okay?" I said, thinking it was over, not knowing that it was just the beginning.

She cleared her throat noisily and that apparently drove me up the wall. "Oh, get on with it already mama." I snapped at her angrily. She'd have usually gone all defensive on my ass but it was like she could tell I was extremely upset.
