Chapter 44 — Zane's POV “Take him to the dungeon,” I barked, my voice slicing through the tension like a knife. Marcus and Liam—our most hardcore warriors—stepped forward. Marcus, covered in battle scars that told stories of survival, gripped Ryker's arm with a grip that said more than words ever could. Liam positioned himself like a secondary shield, every muscle coiled and ready. Ryker? He didn't fight. Didn't resist. Just watched us with these eyes that seemed to be calculating every single move.

Marisse picked the call and put it on speaker. "There had better be an apocalypse." Said Marisse. "This is bad." Van said. "This is very bad. Is Raya there?!" I can't explain it, the way my stomach tightened with dread, the way my throat closed up. I don't remember walking to Marisse's side. The horror in Van's voice held a hot rod to my gut and was twisting it again and again. My chest was heavy, my breathing forced and I didn't even know what the news was yet. Deep down, I may have known.

A sharp crack of branches made my head whip around, and my muscles tensed. Ryker burst through the trees, panting in his half lycan form, looking like he’d run all the way here on foot. He skidded to a halt, eyes widening at the scene. His eyes fell on the blackened corpse, then the bleeding Delta, and finally me, stark naked and crouched over her. He opened his mouth. “Say one word, and I’ll break your jaw,” I growled. Ryker snorted. “Wouldn’t dream of it, Alpha.” Then his face sobered when he spotted Mace’s wound. “Shit.”

Listened for footsteps, for the rustle of his voice that might come with a command I wasn’t strong enough to disobey. But no one came for a long time. I don’t know how long I lay there before the door finally opened again. The air felt heavier. I must have dozed off again. Ryker stepped in. Still in black. But the mask was gone now, and his gloves too. His hair was damp. There were tiny flecks of something, ashes? blood? along the cuffs of his sleeves. He didn’t speak. He walked past the bed, into the bathing chamber. I heard water run.

Couldn’t understand how this was happening. “Ryker,” Marcus said quietly. He was staring at a figure in the center of the army. A massive silver wolf with eyes that burned like molten gold. “He did this. He gathered them all.” Ryker. The mate who had locked Keisha away to keep her safe. Who had just watched her die despite all his efforts. As I watched, Ryker tore through a group of shadow creatures with his bare hands. Not claws. Hands. He’d shifted back to human form, and every time his fist connected with a creature, it exploded in a burst of golden light.
