Maria looked up from Ricardo’s chest, her eyes red and puffy, but I saw the spark of victory in them.
"Every time I close my eyes, I see Dad choking," Maria whispered. "And I see Pauline smiling in the kitchen. If she stays, I will never have peace. My life is a ruin because of her family."
