The Beta’s Unwilling Bride
“Lila, we’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
Lila scrambles up, running to her. “Mama, I have a new friend. Her name is Tessa. She played with me! She’s so fun!”
The woman kneels, hugging Lila tight, then looks at me with a warm smile. “Thank you, Tessa. I’m Mara. She wandered off, and I was worried sick.”
“No problem,” I say, standing and brushing grass off my jeans. “She’s a great kid.”
Mara nods, her eyes soft. “Come on, Lila, let’s get you cleaned up.” She glances back at me. “You’re welcome at our home anytime, Tessa.”
