As if there was not already a perpetual fear in the hues of her eyes, her expression had suddenly become more terrified than ever. "Oh no…" "What?" "Move!" Mara jumped out of her bed, pushing Matthias out of the way. She dropped down to her hands and knees and frantically scanned underneath the bed. "What are you doing?" Matthias pressed, but Mara did not answer. She let out a deep sigh of relief as she pulled from under her bed what appeared to be an old and tattered leather-bound book. "What is that? I've never seen that before." Matthias stepped forward and took the book from her hands. Mara looked as though she wanted to protest before lowering her head again in shame.

When we are inside the room, I saw seven figures on the side of the room and when I fixed my vision, I saw Marionette and some other students looking at me with disbelief in their eyes. “Trying to seduce my boyfriend again, Miss Alixa?” Marionette said while throwing the egg in the air, “Or should we continue on calling you, loser?” Their laugh echoed in the four corners of the room. “What are you trying to do, Marionette? I didn’t do anything! I was just trying to talk to my mate.” I shouted. Again, the room filled with peals of laughter. “What is funny?!” I asked. “You! Y.O.U!” Marionette answered, “Are you some sort of a crazy woman? Desperate to own someone’s man?”

Martin chuckled as he pretended to straighten his back, assuming a tall handsome pose. “It’s not you…it’s cousin beautiful work.” Anne-Marie laughed heartlessly as she bounced around like a pretty butterfly.

Everything we built. A knock came at the door. I went still. Another knock came. Firmer this time. I stood slowly, bottle in hand, and slipped it into the drawer beside the bed. My fingers brushed past my wedding band, old letters, and a cracked charm stone. I shut the drawer and took a breath. “I want no visitors,” I called out. A thin laugh followed. That sickly voice. That smugness that always coiled around my name like a noose. “I’m not one of your Omegas,” Marion said, and the door creaked open like it belonged to her.

"I keep finding new clauses in the company structure. Marion was paranoid. She tied everything in knots. Icarus is mine, yes—but not completely. There are still strings I can't cut." Emma pouts, tracing my jaw with her fingertip. “You’ll find a way. You have to.” I don’t answer. Her father is still watching. Waiting. He gave me Emma and gave me capital, but that wasn’t generosity. It's a ticking clock. Even in death, Marion still has a chokehold on me. Emma must feel the tension in my body. “Do you regret it?” "Why would I?" She studies me carefully. "Marion did this to herself. It took me a moment to place the unfamiliar voice, but it hit me just as the doorknob began to turn. Mara. My new “handmaid.” The door slowly opened, and I sat up quickly, hurrying to hide the book. The last thing I wanted right now was for nayone to question why I was reading an ancient book on reincarnation, so I quickly grabbed it and looked around, then shoved it under the mattress just as the bedroom door fully opened. Mara stepped in. She was already fully dressed in her crisp uniform, her hair pulled back into a neat bun, with the same overly pleasant expression on her face as yesterday.

Nate has never introduced me to this person and in the few days I've been in this pack house, I haven't seen or met her. “I've been in charge of the library for several decades now and thus I know the signs and visuals of a Luna. Welcome, please accept my sworn loyalty.” All I did was nod and a bright smile soon appeared on her face. “You may rise.” I felt throat-tied as I spoke and could only shake my head to relieve the awkward tension. “Thank you, my Luna.” Lady Marietta said and then she stood up from the ground. “Are you interested in wielding magic and practicing sorcery with the spells in the book “Art of Dark Magic?” She inquired and I nodded.

I file that away for later, just in case. “Avoiding shifting,” I answer, then immediately look around to make sure we’re alone. “The waterfall will drown out anything we say,” Marion assures me. I notice a book nearby on the grassy hill. She follows my gaze, then leans over to pick it up. She flashes me the cover: Key Differences Between Star-Kin and Werewolves. “Just a little light reading,” she quips. Something in me roils at the idea that she was supposed to teach me how to read. “I only learned to read in the past few months. The Alpha Prince taught me.”

Mara said. "That is why I brought it," Sena said. Reading it across three evenings, Mara found something unlike the first book related to it the way a shadow was related to what cast it. The first book had been generous and warm, a memory of people worth knowing. This one was the darker companion to it, the account of what happened to the person doing the remembering across thirty years of doing it alone.
