Chapter 45: A Dance with Shadows The gala sparkled with glamour, a testament to the wealth and influence of those in attendance. The air buzzed with the soft hum of conversation, laughter, and the occasional clink of champagne glasses. Melissa, now disguised as Allison Roman, moved through the crowd with practiced grace. She wore a sleek black gown, her hair styled in an elegant updo, and her demeanor calm yet alert. Every step she took felt like a calculated move in a high stakes game of chess.

The moon hung low over the town, casting silver light on the sprawling Deveraux property, wherein the masquerade ball shimmered with shadows and secrets. Celeste stood although for a moment at the pinnacle of the grand staircase, her breath shallow under the black lace mask protecting her face. All around her, human beings in silks and tuxedos twirled and laughed and clinked glasses. But beneath the track and laughter, anxiety simmered. She wasn’t here for the birthday party.

That was the first part of Spencer's plan: to get to know the territory. The trio, as soon as they walked through the grand doors of the Bellagio, became the center of attention. I picked the latter from a mask store in Country P. Its dark purple shade matches my gown, the corners crafted with thick curves and a rope to tie at the back. It was supposed to elevate my confidence. But now it isn’t helping matters as I stand in the crowded space, completely ignored. The music reaches my ears, but not in a pleasant way. Soft music wafts in the room and people were already dancing. Beautiful ladies twirled their gowns happily.

Alexander got out first, adjusting his cufflinks like he owned the place. Then he turned to me. And offered his hand. I hesitated for a fraction of a second before placing my fingers in his. His grip was firm, steady, as he helped me out of the car. The moment I stepped into the light, I felt it. Inside the grand ballroom, the ceilings were draped in dark silks, golden chandeliers casting a warm, flickering glow. Put on a mask, forget your troubles for a while. What do you say?” Mia wanted to refuse at first, but when she caught her own pale, haggard reflection in the mirror, then she nodded inexplicably. Perhaps, she really did need a little disguise and a brief moment to breathe.

The masquerade ball was in full swing and everyone was so engrossed in the evening that they probably couldn’t have imagined what was going to happen. Josh stepped onto the balcony of the ballroom, which was draped in blood-red velvet and gold. He was now putting on his mask which was shaped like a fox, his eyes glinting with amusement. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on her, his centerpiece. Clank!clank!clank!!! Silence followed and everyone now had their attention on Josh, including her. Let the games begin…
