Clara’s POV It’s been a few days since I started staying at this ridiculously massive palace. and believe me, I’ve been doing more than just admiring the royal curtains. I’ve been observing, listening, collecting little pieces of information like a squirrel hoarding nuts before winter. And tonight was the masquerade ball. Fancy dresses, glittering masks, and people pretending they’re more elegant than they actually are. Classic royal stuff. I didn't make an effort to look up at his face anymore because when he went down the last case of the stairs that was between us earlier, his face was totally levelled with mine. As expected, he was wearing a mask. His mask was shiny black. I hate to say this but his mask makes him look hot, especially with his posture with both upper parts of his long sleeve unbuttoned. The memory of what happened in the private room of the event hall where the masquerade ball took place popped into the corner of my head. I then withdrew my gaze and just threw it around. “You can now leave her with me, Martin,” he said to his subject.

She danced and mingled with ease, while I found solace at the bar, sipping on a drink and watching the partygoers from afar. As the night progressed, I found myself feeling more at ease with the party's anonymity. The masks allowed me to forget about my past and embrace the mystery and intrigue of the night. But that all changed when I saw him - a tall, dark stranger, dressed in a black suit and mask. He stared at me, making me feel uncomfortable. I quickly averted my gaze, pretending to be interested in my drink, but he approached me nonetheless. "Hey there, beautiful. May I have this dance?" he asked, his voice smooth and low.

I started to tear up. “I-I can’t go. I’m sorry. It’s just ---” Maya and Natasha sat down on my bed, on either side of me. They each grabbed one of my hands. “Girl, we are not self-centered idiots,” Maya said gently. “I agree that most people around here are, but we aren’t. We don’t know what your secrets are, but we know that you have some. That’s why we have not pressured you to go out with us before. But you deserve a break, and this isn’t just any party. This is a masquerade ball, and we bought some scent-masking spray so you can double down on whatever it is you are taking.”

Dante noted. “Oh, really?” I asked as we got out of bed to get dressed. “Yes, haven’t you heard?” he answered with a smirk. “The Golden Hive is throwing a masquerade ball.” *** I adjusted the fancy white mask on my face. It was beautiful with intricate patterns and silver studs on it. I was wearing a white ball gown that was tight at the waist and went out at the bottom that Valerie let me borrow. She had invited me to get ready with her in her room even though I would have preferred to get ready with my roommates. But getting close to her could bring results to my investigation, so I went, and it wasn't like I could say no to her invitation either.

I tried calling, but still nothing “He isn’t answering” A bolt of panic flashed across my eyes as I looked back at Denver. I’d be damned if that was the only complication that night—but it was the first. “Welcome!” His grating voice rumbled the halls and twisted my gut. “To the Masquerade Ball this year,” Jaxon paused for the music and applaud to die down. “As you’ve already seen from the grand entrance unlike anything you’ve witnessed before, tonight is going to be different from all the other Balls in the past” He croaked, clenching his hands around the mic and people started whispering to themselves.

Only one person had that number. I answered. "Isabella, something happened at the theater," the other party said in a low voice. It was Dante Capone, Vito's eldest son. He had remained behind to monitor the situation. My fingers tightened around the phone. "Tell me." "The Don entered the private box," Dante said. "He removed the mask." I held my breath. "And?" Dante sounded unsettled. "He smiled." "What?" "He smiled," Dante repeated. "Not just a smile. He looked almost delirious."

"Do you take this woman to be your wife, to stand by her through thick and thin?" "I do," the man said, his voice muffled by the mask. The guests whispered in awe. Howard Larson, the Larson family's big shot, was so in love with me that he would not let a bad cold stop our big day. He did not want to disappoint me. "Wait a second." The man's eyes darted around, and his forehead was dotted with sweat. I smiled and asked, "Howard, you're looking a bit pale. Too busy with the wedding to remember your medicine?"

My senses feel too alert, like my body is waiting for something to go wrong. Then the music shifts to a much slower one and Mallory steps onto the stage with a delicate yet graceful smile on her face. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It’s a pleasure to see all of you here. I’m glad to see this masquerade ball being a total success as all of you look magnificent in your masks.” People cheer and clap at her words. Mallory’s brows furrow. “But something’s missing, right?” She asks and everyone looks at each other in confusion.

"Yes we did but the person on the information counter informed us that the owner will see us again another day. " "You can come back another time then. " I said as matter-of-factly as I set the bag down on the kitchen counter. "We have to see him tomorrow. We need to to speak to him before the grand masquerade ball at the Grand Platinum Hotel next week." "A masquerade ball?" I asked smirking, my back turned towards her. "Yes, a ball to announce the TV series they will release soon.. Haven't you been watching news or latest trend these days?"
