Mat said, and the guy looked at me and smiled. “Sure, Sir… How about we start laying out a plan to see who we need to call to join a team?” he said, and I nodded. “That is an excellent idea,” I said, and Matty smiled. “See? You are already killing it…” he said, and I rolled my eyes. I was not killing anything; it was his efficient assistant who knew what the fuck to do. “It is him, not me,” I rolled my eyes, and he laughed.

Now we were standing in the parking lot in front of the crammed cars, and everyone was aware that there were six of us and there were only four seats in the cars. Matt, with whom I had only exchanged a few words so far, blew out smoke from a lit cigarette and frowned thoughtfully. He was the youngest of the boys, but he looked at least two years older due to the fact that he always wore some sort of cap on his head and had grown a beard on his cheeks. "So I'm definitely not going on foot," he declared resolutely. June kicked him in the shin. "Not that anyone would expect anything else from you."

He's tall in that effortless athlete way—broad shoulders, dark hair, familiar eyes, and the kind of confidence people spend years trying to fake. Robbie's younger brother. Quarterback. Matty and I always got along growing up, even though he was Rider’s best friend. He was a lot like Rory, easy-going and fun. Two traits that were foreign to Rider.
