Chapter 26 - Defiant No Maxton stood in the hallway outside Georgia’s room, his hand hesitating over the doorknob. After his conversation with Tanner, he felt compelled to spend more time with her, to try to understand the woman she is and to understand what he truly feels towards her, to determine his next course of action. It was his way of searching for answers in the midst of his confusion, or perhaps it was something deeper — something he was reluctant to admit, even to himself.

If that woman keeps talking, we could be in trouble. "Forget that old woman, we have worse things to deal with," Maxwell says, his eyes startled. Isabella immediately becomes worried. "What happened?" she asks, looking away before adding, "Are Elena and Hector giving us trouble?" "No. Maxmilian just entered the restricted area of the hall." "What?" "He just went through the curtains, Mama." Exasperated, the woman takes a step toward the scene, but stops and talks back to Maxwell: "The coffin is closed, we don't have to worry about anything."

" His words should have felt heavy, but they didn't. They wrapped around me like a shield, guarding against the fears clawing at my mind. I took a deep breath, letting his confidence in me bolster my own. "The party is on the east side of the mansion," Max explained, stepping back and offering his arm. "Shall we?" The mansion was enormous, far larger than I had ever imagined when I first arrived. The main section where we stayed was connected to the east and west wings by long, ornate corridors. As we walked, the soft hum of distant chatter grew louder, the vibrations of life and energy reverberating through the halls.

—— Inside the base. Maxwell’s sudden arrival caught the stationed officers off guard. “Commander, what brings you here so late?” one of them asked, quickly saluting. “None of your concern,” Maxwell replied coldly. “Get back to work.” He moved past a series of checkpoints and entered the laboratory wing. Harrison followed at a distance, his eyes widening as he took in the sight before him. Half the facility was a research center, the other half a reinforced prison. The walls were made of bulletproof glass and heavy steel bars, sealing whatever was inside.

Could I get Max to yield? "Sorry, we usually have dozens of people to greet us," Max stated, pushing the front door open and then we walked inside. I inhaled. I was here and even though it was only for three days, I was going to find out all I could about Maximilian McTavish. "Wow!" I exclaimed as my eyes took in the space, which was a huge vestibule with a parquet floor. Each tile had the letter M in the middle. The walls were panelled with dark, polished mahogany.

Max parked the car in front of the mail entrance of house door and we walked inside together, hand in hand. We entered the great hall and a discreet scent of roses drifted into my nostrils. A rich mansion, as one could imagine. A large chandelier on the ceiling, a round table below with a very expensive vase, I supposed. A huge curved staircase led up to the top floor. To my right was a large living area and to my left was another large wooden door. We went to the left. Max didn't let go of my hand. He was always so protective over me and especially now. I liked that, I never had that.

“Maxton? Is something wrong?” He caught up to her, grabbing her arm. He pulled her into a secluded hollow. “Hey!” Mara protested. “What was that for?” “Were you going to tell me about the full moon festival tonight?” His voice shook with anger. Mara blinked. “It’s harmless. It won’t hurt you.” “Harmless?” Maxton snapped, pacing. “Yesterday the moon dragged memories out of me I didn’t even know I had. I thought only one person killed my mother, but I saw another. Someone else pulled the trigger. Someone orchestrated it.”

At the far end of the room, half-hidden by velvet curtains, was a hallway with a glowing sign above it: VVIP ROOM. His jaw tightened. Without another word, Max turned and stormed toward it, cutting through the crowd. As he moved past people, they couldn't help but notice him. "Mr. Anderson....wait!" Charles called out as he hurried after him. Max pushed open the first door but it was Empty. He didn’t stop to think. The second door flew open and a loud gasp echoed from inside. “Hey! What the hell?!” someone shouted as a couple scrambled to cover themselves.

“The other one?” Max looked down at his own feet, then lifted his face. “Oh.” “MAX?” Gabriella’s voice came from inside the house. “I’m here!” “DON’T RUN!” “I’m not!” Technically, he wasn’t running, but he was walking very fast with criminal confidence. I rubbed the space between my eyebrows. “Dios mío.” Max finally reached my side and immediately grabbed the back of my dress with one hand. Then his attention finally shifted to Rowan. He stared at him for a few seconds, glanced at the huge mansion down below, then looked back at Rowan with a small, grave seriousness that immediately made me suspicious. I knew that face. “Does your house have robots?”

Finn halted by Claire's door and said to the guy, "Maxton Hotel, room 200. Be there by 10pm, she will be waiting for you." "Maxton Hotel? Is it not..." Finn's eyes turned black, "Just be there." "Okay." The guy quickly walked away. Finn sighed and knocked at Claire's door, "Come in." He went in. "Ma'am, there is something you have to see." He walked closer to Claire and operated the iPad to the video his men sent to him. He gave it to Claire. Claire snatched it from him and watched the video. When she was done, her forehead pulled together in a frown, and her hands clenched the iPad.
