Shock rocking me to the core, silent screams running rampant in my mind. “Let this be a warning,” Cain calls out, looking around at the soldiers. None of whom flinched or made a singular move in helping their comrade. Either they’re used to this behavior or they’re heartless, and I don’t know which is worse. “Touch or look at what is mine and I will end you.”

When the world comes for me again — and it will — I’ll meet it standing tall, eyes bright, with Kael’s mark at my neck and my own strength in my hands. Never again powerless. Never again forgotten.
