Then the laughter ripped through the air, taunting my ears. “Ignore them.” I said to myself. Easier said than done, Valeria. I forced my attention to my phone, scrolling mindlessly, pretending none of this mattered. I shouldn’t have looked. Because the second I did, the screen slapped me with something that made my stomach drop. A meme. Not just any meme, me, Zane, and Landon photoshopped into a disgusting threesome, covered in crude stickers and comments. My heart throbbed with pain, my fingers visibly shaking.

Mentions, messages, tags. My stomach tightened as I opened one. It was a meme caricature of my old picture. There was a poop emoji on top of my head, my brown eyes were replaced with a red laser, and a boldly written text on the picture said ‘SLUT’. I groaned and locked my phone immediately. But it was too late. I’d already seen it. Another buzz. Then another. Curiosity got the better of me again. I saw a particular message from a private page in my DM.

They were giving me a weird dirty look that made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Equally confused, I turned to look at the screen to figure out what the problem could be only to see the unimaginable. A gasp filled my throat as I stared in shock at the content displayed on the screen. Instead of the commercial data I had assembled while preparing for this presentation, I was seeing sex memes and p**n adverts.

"I have to meet with the show's director today. Besides, it's not appropriate for us to hang out together given our relationship." Reading this message, Victor anxiously chomped on more mint gum. What's not appropriate? The just-woken man lay on his bed, staring glumly at his phone. His hair was a mess from sleep, with a cowlick sticking up in the middle, bobbing as he shook his head. Victor pouted, not knowing how to respond. He ended up sending a self-made meme. The meme was of himself, teary-eyed, with a caption saying "Okay" in a sad voice.

Selena hurled the tablet onto the sofa. The screen was still lit. A meme kept sliding up her timeline. It was that photo of Ava, startled by the flash, a french fry caught between her lips. Across it, in huge bold letters, someone had written: "Her only crime was buying this many chips and not sharing with the rest of us." Under it were fifty thousand likes. "I’m so done with this!" Vivian cried, covering her face. "Has the whole internet gone collectively insane? It’s an oversized gray hoodie. It’s cheap junk food. Why do they even like her? Some people are literally analyzing the fabric of that hoodie."

And now, the internet was having a fucking field day. Noah stopped pacing, long enough to grab his phone again, thumbs flying over the screen as he scanned the endless floods of comments on his innagram. I sucked my teeth, irritation clawing up my throat. “You need to stop reading that shit.” He snapped his gaze to me at that, and I’ve never seen such pure anger in his gaze. “Do you know what they are calling me? Have you seen the fucking memes they’ve started to make about me? I’ve spent my entire life--?”

The woman in the yellow dress stood beside him with a smirk. "People turned it into memes," Astrid said. She scrolled through the comments. "It is so viral even penguins in Antarctica have probably seen it. Mom's phone has not stopped ringing since last night." I pressed my face into the pillow to block out the sight. "Turn it off." Astrid did not stop. She read the words aloud in a flat tone. "'So desperate.' 'What a joke.' 'That poor guy, she ambushed him.' Here is a short one. It just says, 'stupid bitch.'"
