Conner lurked further back, hunched and hollow, avoiding my gaze.
“It’s time, darling,” Melanie purred, like she hadn’t murdered my mother and ruined my life. “We’re going on a little trip.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” I spat.
Her smile tightened. “You don’t have a choice.”
I lunged before she could react. My fist cracked across her jaw, the satisfying thud echoing in the chamber. Sadie shrieked and came at me with claws out. I ducked, drove my knee into her gut, and sent her staggering back into the wall. I could escape for a second—one wild, triumphant second.
