Marta stared at me. “What was that melody that you just sang that calmed the baby?”
“I… I don’t know,” I said honestly, continuing the soft hum as his eyelids fluttered closed. “It just came to me. I'm surprised at it myself.”
“You’ve never hummed that before around this house, Mrs. Hazel.” she said quietly.
Something in her tone made me look up. “What do you mean by that, Marta?”
She hesitated, glancing toward the door as if expecting someone. “Nothing, dear. It was just an observation. Nothing to think about.”
