We split after we entered our home and when I was finally alone, Inara said to me, “If you can manipulate memories, you should be able to manipulate the future.” That made so much sense and gave me hope as I sat by the bed and pulled out my mother’s journal, hoping to finish reading it before dinner which I did but at the back of the journal was a small brown envelope with a writer's letter that shook the foundation of everything I thought I knew about her from reading her journal. Because it was addressed to me and written by my late mother.

And for you, I know we have many beautiful memories always to accompany you. Unfortunately, I also know that many bad things have happened between us recently, and maybe those will be the final bad memories. That’s why I’m sending you this letter and all the gifts—because I want to leave you with the best memories. Believe me, I want to hug you right now, but I can’t because of all the guilt in my head. I don’t know if you’ve already discovered this or not, but if not, I want to be the first to tell you.

Aunt Lou opened it, revealing several old letters, their edges yellowed with age. “These were in the same box as the photo albums that Madam Victoria told me to give you the other day, it would seem that she doesn’t remember it anymore because her real memories just came by for a moment,” she explained. “And I thought you might find them... enlightening.” I picked up one of the letters, my heart pounding as I read the familiar handwriting.
