We split after we entered our home and when I was finally alone, Inara said to me, “If you can manipulate memories, you should be able to manipulate the future.” That made so much sense and gave me hope as I sat by the bed and pulled out my mother’s journal, hoping to finish reading it before dinner which I did but at the back of the journal was a small brown envelope with a writer's letter that shook the foundation of everything I thought I knew about her from reading her journal. Because it was addressed to me and written by my late mother.

Aunt Lou opened it, revealing several old letters, their edges yellowed with age. “These were in the same box as the photo albums that Madam Victoria told me to give you the other day, it would seem that she doesn’t remember it anymore because her real memories just came by for a moment,” she explained. “And I thought you might find them... enlightening.” I picked up one of the letters, my heart pounding as I read the familiar handwriting. It was Justin’s. The first letter was dated nearly a decade ago. Justin had written to Grandma Victoria, apologizing for his mistakes and expressing regret for the pain he’d caused. But what struck me most was a cryptic line near the end:

He opened the paper he was holding and glanced at Haru, who was quietly crying, then started reading the letter. Dad, this is Jared. How are you? Maybe if you’re reading this, I’m probably dead. Dad, I'm sorry if I left you. I'm sorry if I can't stand the pain I'm struggling with. I hope if I'm gone, you'll be happy. Dad, please give more love to your children and Aunt Sherlyn. I'm happy to be lost in this world because I'll be with my mom.

66 He said, "The only real reason you can't is because you were in the wrong place to begin with. This is where you belong. Where you once lived. Time is not only the answer to getting your answers, sometimes you just need to go back to the past... go back to where you truly belong." I sighed, acknowledging the truth in his words. "You're right. If I want to remember, then this place is the perfect setting to harness my memories." The decision to confront the past, to explore this familiar yet mysterious place, lingered in the air like a quiet resolution.

I tell them. Glancing at Lee, I notice his confused expression. "How?" He asks. "Hypnosis." I state. "I've learnt that it helps one recover their lost memories." "Snow. Don't stress too much about this. You need to be completely healed and healthy before you think of doing anything else." Lee tells me. "I'm fine Lee."

Mother, Mariande. My vision blurred from the tears that had gathered around my eyes. I remembered nothing of about what was written in the letter. Yet my heart ached as if I did. The letter slipped from my trembling fingers. I grabbed it again and pressed it tightly against my chest as a broken sob tore out of me. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I couldn't remember her. I couldn't remember a single day we spent together. But my heart did. My heart remembered everything my mind had forgotten.

At the bottom of the page, written in jagged, hurried strokes of dark ink, was a single sentence that sent a paralyzing chill straight to my core: “If I ever forget the truth… don't let me trust my own memories.”

Almost like a voice from the past reaching toward the future. The envelope was made from paper that had clearly been cut from a larger sheet rather than purchased from a stationer, and the handwriting on the outside was careful in the way that suggested someone who did not write often but wanted to do it well. Adrian almost set it aside for later, as he did with most personal correspondence during working hours. There were always meetings waiting, decisions needing approval, and endless responsibilities that came with rebuilding a world. But something about this letter made him hesitate. Perhaps it was the unusual simplicity of it. Perhaps it was the strange pull of instinct through the bond
