The trolley rattled as it slid inside.
“Where to, boss?” the driver asked, his hands tight on the wheel.
“Home. No detours.”
The van rolled through the sleeping city, headlights flashing on wet streets. No one spoke. Everyone knew silence was safer.
When we reached my estate, the iron gates opened and closed behind us like the jaws of a beast. Inside, we carried Matt’s body down into the basement. The air was thick, the walls heavy with silence.
Meredith arrived soon after, wrapped in a black coat. Her face was pale, her eyes swollen from crying, but her jaw stayed hard.
