We had spent the previous day cooped up in my tent but today, I wanted to show Zara around. After taking our baths, we had our breakfast and left my tent, hand in hand. Zara was wearing a long blue gown which I bought for her and a pair of earrings to match. It was surprising to see how she had transformed overnight and now, she looked like a very beautiful princess. I even got red lipstick for her and asked her to apply it to make it more difficult for anyone to figure out her identity.

The intensity of it made her chest tighten. “Thank you,” she said carefully, searching his expression for mockery, but there was none. He gestured toward one of her pieces displayed on the runway behind them. “The lines remind me of early Renaissance architecture. Clean and balanced and almost mathematical.” Zariah blinked. No man at these events ever bothered to ask about the art in her dresses. They were always eager to swipe their cards when she smiled at them. “You know art?” she asked, surprised. “And is crashing fashion shows a hobby of yours?”

Today, however, the silence was broken. Zara was wheeling Begum Salma along the sun-dappled path. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine. Her eyes softened slightly. “Your hair looks nice,” she said. “Thank you,” Zara replied with a small smile, swaying her head gently from side to side. The braids framed her face beautifully.
