“Can you like, show me? What you mean, when you think of a mermaid?” I glance at Anton and then put my coffee on the table and move closer to Laila, conjuring a children’s story book in my hands as I do. It’s one of my favorites from when I was a little girl – a story about a mermaid who falls in love with a Prince who lives on land. She gives up her ocean life to go and live at his side.

It’s almost like he wants us to ruin each other just to prove him right. Marcus smiles, warm and reassuring, before pushing himself up from the chair. "It's okay." He moves toward the shelves, fingers skimming over the spines of old books. "Now, about Queen Meredith. I was just about to send this to Bloodthorn, but I decided to wait until you arrived." He pulls out a thick, leather-bound volume and flips through the pages before retrieving a brown envelope tucked inside. He slides it across the table toward me. I pick it up, turning it over in my hands before carefully breaking the seal. The paper inside is stiff, the ink dark and rust-colored: blood.

Sarah’s room felt oddly calm, like a temple. Chloe opened the book and flipped to the page she wanted. When she began to read, I almost screamed at her to stop. “The little mermaid kissed his hand, and felt as if her heart were already broken. His wedding morning would bring death to her, and she would change into the foam of the sea.” I had no idea why she’d chosen such a horrific passage when the mermaid almost turns into sea foam, but Chloe’s air was determined and her voice sure. I closed my eyes and just let my daughter’s voice wash over me.

Mariana explained. “Does that mean I got into the book?” I wondered to myself. “What book?” she asked, then I looked at her. “Didn’t you see the book I’m holding?” I asked, and she shook her head. We went under the sea, and while swimming, I was amazed at the fish, dolphins, sharks, whales, and other types of fish that were under it. I have never seen fish and coral so clear and beautiful. I didn’t know how far we were until I saw the beautiful kingdom under the sea, and there I saw other mermaids with different colored tails.

All of the three maids held on to one side of a large blue crystal that they then held over my body and before I could protest, they activated it and water fell from the crystal in a shower like motion. I knew that the book had magic, but it had never been emphasized, the author had never mentioned the small and unique gadgets or the beautiful crystals that could carry things. All I knew was the gruesome effect magic had had in cursing Daisy to lose half her lifespan. I don't even know if the prince has magic, all that was written in the book, was that he has a lot of mana. I watched in awe as the large crystal held by the three maids disintegrated with every warm drop of water that fell out

While looking at the lights on top, the images regarding the mermaid gradually emerged in her mind. She told the story very slowly and very emotionally. As expected, it was more moving than when a manly man like Josiah told it. As Nia listened to the story, she actually was so moved that she started sobbing. After Meredith finished telling the story, she lowered her head and looked at Nia's teary eyes, and then said with concern, "Are you alright, Nia? It's actually just a story. It's not real." "I know it's a story, but I still feel very sad," Nia said while feeling moved, "Why did the mermaid have to become seafoam and disappear? Her prince would be very hurt like that.

“I don’t know at this point sweetheart.” Meredith nodded like that made perfect sense, then held out her arms. “You still have to read, though.” She did. Monet climbed into bed beside her, the storybook open on her lap, her voice soft and steady. As the pages turned and Meredith’s eyelids grew heavy, the world started to right itself just a little. She closed the book when the little girl finally drifted off, brushed a kiss to her forehead, and turned to leave. But Richard was leaning against the doorframe.

Her name was Meredith, and anyone could easily tell who her parents were with just one look. She and Mary came back to Vedantya during the holidays to learn some magic from the books in the Atharvaveda library, because she had shown a lot of interest in witchcraft during her childhood. Even after all the talk about how werewolves couldn't do witchcraft, she proved to be stubborn and did exactly what she wanted. “Mary!” She yelled again, stopping beside Mary, who stood in front of a large shelf with a large book in her hand. Mary turned to her and asked, “What is it, Meredith?”

Veronica held a book on her lap, that was strangely dry for where it must have come from. Did the merfolk use magic to enchant their books, keeping them safe from the salt water? Curious, I came closer to the pair. Veronica immediately patted the empty seat beside her. I must have looked as tired as I felt. I flopped down in the seat and then thanked her. “Veronica was just telling me some of what she learned,” Julian filled me in.

"You fight systems to rise. I built them to rule. Why resist?" Sake burned silk fire down my throat, loosening the knot his proximity always tied. "Because your empire's built on engineered ruins—scandals, leaks, blood like Rourke's neck. I'm no pawn for your Tokyo games." He leaned closer, scarred jaw inches from mine, heat radiating no touch—torture exquisite. "Pawn? No. Queen." Obsidian eyes bored soul-deep, half-smirk curving lethal. "I fell first, Nia.
