Mate Rebound
The branches scratched my arms, but I kept on going till I came into a clear space, and my breath caught.
Caught in the roots and leaves was a wolf pup. Its fur was light-gray, covered with darker patches, clotted with blood along the side of a leg. Its half-open eyes were dull with pain, and its tiny body trembled at every breath.
My throat closed.
“Moon Goddess… It’s a baby.”
Without even thinking, I fell to my knees. The pup whined, and its head fluttered feebly as if it were trying to lift its head but couldn’t do it. It appeared deserted, too weak to be able to make it through a night out here alone.
