Chapter 20 The message arrived at dawn. I woke to the shrill vibration of my phone on the nightstand, the screen glowing like a warning. “Chaotic. Everyone was distracted.” My grip on the phone tightened. “What did she do?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “I pulled the security footage,” Madison said quickly. “I’m sending it to you now.” My phone buzzed almost immediately. I didn’t hesitate. I opened it. The footage loaded slowly, the timestamp blinking in the corner as the video began to play, grainy but clear enough to make out the details that mattered. Midnight. The studio was empty. Or at least… it looked empty.

Elliot’s POV The glow of multiple monitors washed over my face as I sat in the quiet hum of my private lab. On the central screen, a news anchor’s voice cut through the silence with rehearsed urgency. “Breaking news: A catastrophic meltdown has occurred at the Chernobyl-2 experimental reactor site. Massive amounts of radioactive energy have been released into the atmosphere. Emergency crews are responding, but experts are warning of unprecedented side effects. Some theorists suggest this could trigger the activation of latent genetic traits in individuals, potentially leading to… supernatural abilities.”

The Midnight Hour As the clock struck twelve, May slipped out of the cabin, her heart pounding in her chest. She had on a dark hoodie and jeans, blending into the shadows as she moved silently through the woods. The moon was a faint glow behind a veil of clouds, casting an eerie pallor over the landscape. Every step felt heavier than the last, each crack of a twig beneath her feet echoing like a gunshot in the silence. She reached the outskirts of the old warehouse, a dilapidated structure long abandoned, its windows shattered and walls covered in peeling paint. The place looked like it hadn’t seen life in years, yet tonight, it seemed alive with secrets.
