We stayed like that for a long minute, his arms wrapped around me, both of us breathing hard against the glass. Later, after we cleaned up and dressed, Mia was already drawing at the table when we came out. She looked up with that bright smile that always made my chest ache. “Mommy, can we read a story before bed?”

Michelle gripped her tea mug a bit more as she listened to Chloe. From the next room, the gentle sound of Raymond reading a story could be heard. I thought we had a future, Chloe said, her voice trembling slightly. Michelle carefully set her tea down and moved over to hug Chloe. She didn’t say anything, offering just silent support.

Liam walked into the children's section of the library and stopped on his tracks when he heard a very familiar voice. " 'Why are you shaking the jungle to pieces??' Cried the parrot who had never seen an elephant before 'What kind of an animal are you anyway??' It asked" A smile formed on his lips on seeing Mirrie sitting on a bean bag surrounded by a dozen five year olds. Her face was so animated and she was telling the story, changing the voices according to change in character

Her eyes keep closing as Mia reads softly from an old storybook. “…and the little fox knew, in his heart, that even though the woods were wide and the sky was endless, he was never alone.” Mia’s voice is soft, soothing—like a lullaby in story form. Her fingers trace idle patterns over Wendy’s hair as she reads. I feel her body settle against mine. Her cheek brushes my jaw, and I press a quiet kiss to her temple, breathing in the scent of her hair. Wendy’s breathing slows, deepens.

"Then it'll be just like old times." Misty opened the book and smiled as Eva shuffled around to get comfortable on her lap. Misty then read out the title of the book. Vampires and Their Beloveds "Is this a story or an information book?" Eva questioned her mother. "Looks like it's an information book," Misty spoke out as she turned the page. Before Misty could start reading again, Eva could hear the alarm clock ringing once again in her shared room with Alana. Eve quickly rose to her feet and sighed.

I want to see Ember before it gets too late in the evening. Alina hops off me and trots up the steps. Alina: ‘She’s been waiting for you.’ I smile and follow her through the front door and head straight for the two-year-old nursery. Maggie and Melissa are both in there putting the little ones to bed. I lean against the doorway and take in the scene before me. Maggie is reading, “Don’t Push the Button,” and Melissa is tucking little ones into bed. The little ones are extra unruly this evening and several are jumping on their beds. Melissa looks to be stressed to the max, while Maggie seems oblivious as she continues to read the book despite the chaos.

She could almost feel Mia's warm hand tugging her forward. Elowyn remembered two little girls wrapped in one blanket with a candle flickering on a cracked windowsill. Mia whispering stories: "One day, we'll leave. We'll see a real city. We'll buy bread that's soft, not hard like these stones Sergius gives us." Elowyn laughed so hard she snorted. Mia used to pinch her nose whenever she cried. "Stop crying, goat-face. You look ugly when you cry. It's just a birthday cake, Ellie."

“Come, Mia. Daddy is reading a story.” I look at Mikhail to see what he thinks. I don’t want to bother them. He looks at me for a second, then gives a small nod. I walk in and sit on the floor next to his legs. I lean my back on the side of the bed. He is quiet for a few seconds, then starts reading again. The story is about a lost horse, I think, but I don’t listen to the words. I only hear his voice. It’s deep. A little rough. I close my eyes and just listen.

"Mrs. Montez. I was most delighted when I heard that you were still carrying my seed. I can't wait to be reunited with you both." I looked at the text in horror and almost dropped my phone on the floor to break. I never thought that he had my cell phone number. And getting his text meant that he was on me. *** ~MARIO~ "I can read very well now, Bambi, right?" Arianna beamed with excitement after she just read me the short story that they were reading at her school today. "You can, and I'm so proud of you," I kissed her cheeks. "I'll go and read to Sofia!" She said as she left me in the living room and headed off down the hallway to Sofia's room.

They were the words I didn’t know I wanted to hear from her but now as I read them I realized I’d not be satisfied until she tells them to my face while looking into my eyes.
