13 - Ruby Fridays — ۩ Racers, you have reached the final mission of your game - Midday Mile. This racetrack is full of danger and deception, with death awaiting at every turn. The Midday Mile racetrack awaits the final challenge for the eight racers competing for freedom. The racers have been provided identical high-performance racing cars for the ultimate test of speed and endurance. The track is one mile long and divided into six laps. Each lap contains different obstacles designed to slow and fail racers down to doom. If you wish to escape this arena of doom, you must cross the finish line first and claim the missing piece of the map that will show you the exit.

“Sorry, we won’t be checking in.” Just when I thought I had escaped death, I realized the numbers on top of our heads did not change. We would still die in six hours! The fear of death overwhelmed me again. My face was pale as I stood stiffly in front of the counter. The people queuing behind me were grumbling impatiently. When I met my parents’ concerned gazes, I forced myself to calm down and continued observing. The people checking in after us all had different numbers on their heads. It also meant that this flight would not be the death of us. Something else was going to kill us.

I thought she was calling to explain. But the first thing she said after I answered was, "Did you see that video online? "Evan, don't overthink it. "He was driving long-distance for the first time. I was just on the same route." My knuckles turned white around the steering wheel. "On the same route for three hundred miles, Vanessa?" The other end of the call went silent for two seconds. I closed my eyes, and I was hit with the migraine, which usually preceded the images of the person. Hearing him echo Mom's words, I thought, to them, Sharon already paid the price. So I almost dying was just karma? I dropped my gaze, letting the silence speak. Chuck caught it. Saturday, December 13 (One month later) A month—fucking gone. And One-Mile had stepped onto US soil at DFW Airport less than two hours ago with one top-of-mind focus: seeing Brea ASAP. Since he was in desperate times, that called for desperate measures. After yesterday’s shit show, his situation had leapfrogged over merely wretched and landed squarely in last-gasp, holy-fuck land. He needed to regroup—fast. But he’d never imagined he’d be doing it in this swanky suburban mansion.
