Some of them read multiple times judging by the cracking of the binding. History. Military strategy. Economics. Law. Psychology. Philosophy. One entire shelf of biographies of powerful men across different centuries and continents. And then something that surprised me. Fiction. A whole section of it tucked into the far corner like something private. Novels. Some of them old enough that the titles had faded. I pulled one out carefully. A Russian novel. Thick. Dense. The kind of book that required patience and silence and the willingness to sit inside discomfort for extended periods.

I almost commented on how people have no lives, but then something he said had struck me. "Military's Girl?" I asked in confusion, the words almost fumbling out of my mouth. "Military is Ty's nickname, that's what everyone's been calling him. Not that many people from this town would do what he did, so he's kind of earned himself that nick name."

“Why do you want to be an EMT?” Tim cleared his throat. “Well, sir, I was a medic in the Army, and I loved it. I’d like to pursue that path in civilian life.” “Honorable discharge?” “Yes sir, a medical separation. I was wounded in Afghanistan.” John leaned back in his chair. “It sounds to me like you weren’t happy about being discharged.” “No, sir, I wasn’t. I’d planned to retire from the Army twenty years from now. But it is what it is.” “I wasn’t either when it happened to me,” the program director confided. “I was in the Marines. And like you, I planned on being a career man. But small arms fire during Desert Storm altered my path.”

Joan and Donatello arrived a little bit earlier than predicted and immediately noticed that they were in a military town. Military towns were towns located near military camps. Most supplies for the camp are attained from these kinds of towns. The most distinctive feature of military towns is the presence of soldiers, everywhere. However, they managed to avoid most of them and get to the town’s clinic. That’s when they met Nara.

It's either history, military, or supernatural romances. I've never understood why so many people preferred such kinds of novels and genres all that much. Though, I meant that for the latter part. They're basically the same every single time. An average lady meets one sexy, handsome, extraordinary man, or two hot males battle over her, and there's usually some ridiculous drama that brings her further and deeper together with the men, and then she has to choose the obvious decision. Everyone had predicted her decision since the very beginning of the chapter. "And they're usually sequels or fantasy epics," I mumbled to myself.

The only thing I like about Gray’s office is that it’s filled with books. Big, thick books bound in leather, with gilt-edged pages, texts on war and military theory, encyclopedic tomes on world history, classic literature, poetry. But it’s not a library collected after a lifetime of reading. It is a library that has been purchased for show - Drew’s idea of which books should line the shelves of a military man’s office. He has a similar collection in his own office. Most of the books have never even been opened, eyes have never rested on their words, fingers have never caressed their pages. They are as untouched and virginal as nuns.
