Willow tried to distract me with a conversation, but every word felt hollow.
By the time evening came, my nerves were frayed.
A knock sounded at the door.
Mira entered, carrying a dress draped over her arm. It was deep blue, simple but elegant, with long sleeves and a fitted bodice.
"For tonight," she said gently, laying it on the bed.
I stared at it. "I don't need—"
"Yes, you do," Mira interrupted kindly.
"Appearance matters to the council. You'll want to look... composed."
I almost laughed at that.
