Her laugh was a broken thing. “No, Kael. It’s stronger than me.”
Behind him, branches snapped. Jarek burst through the treeline with Mira and Tovan close behind, blades drawn. The second they entered the clearing, they faltered. The magic hit them like a wall, thick, suffocating, electric.
“Gods,” Mira breathed. “What is that?”
Kael didn’t look at her. “Get back.”
Jarek stepped forward, sword raised. “Not a chance. We’re with you, Kael.”
