“Bennet cleared his throat, maybe to diffuse the tension. “Wait—did you just say Kyle Cross?”
The question sliced through the moment like a knife.
Mrs. Baxter blinked, caught off guard. “Yes,” she said slowly, her voice wary. “Kyle Cross.”
Bennet’s grip on the wheel tightened. His knuckles went white.
I frowned, glancing between them. “What’s wrong?”
For a second, Bennet didn’t answer. He just stared straight ahead, eyes wide, like he was piecing together something terrible. Then his voice came out quiet, almost a whisper. “Kyle Cross is my uncle.”
