Think about it—Izumi trying to get her nosy friends off her back about never dating, Ko offering to play the boyfriend as a 'favor' because he's just that kind of guy. The tension writes itself because they're already so comfortable yet so awkward around each other. You get all these scenes where he's putting his arm around her shoulders in public and she's internally combusting, but then they have to go home and debrief like it's a mission. The best fics use it to explore how their dynamic would actually shift if they had to perform affection before they've admitted real feelings. There's one where they start leaving little notes for each other about 'character motivations' and it slowly turns into genuine love letters. It's predictable but in the warm, fuzzy way you want from 'Horimiya' fan content.

I'm less sold on the angsty separation plots, though. Some writers try to graft high-drama breakups onto them years after graduation, which often feels forced. Their foundation in canon is so solid that ripping it apart needs a really delicate hand most don't manage.
