The water here wasn't the stagnant black of the lake; it was a churning, bioluminescent green, filled with glowing plankton and the strange, sightless fish of the deep. "Look," Rhys said, pointing his tablet toward the far end of the cavern. A massive, rusted hatch was embedded in the rock—an old submarine pen from the Cold War. And tied to the rusted pier was a sleek, black silhouette that looked like a shard of glass.

I looked at Moana. She didn't look down at the crag lord with hatred, nor did she flinch at the sight of eighty silver-tipped pikes gleaming in the pale winter light. She raised her right hand, her bare palm open to the sky, the raw cut across her skin completely healed into a thin, silver scar that pulsed with a faint, golden light. "Blow the caps," she commanded softly. Kaelen didn't hesitate. He struck a flint against the iron wedge, a single, brilliant spark catching the end of the hemp fuse. The fire raced down into the granite crack with a sharp, hissing snap, disappearing into the dark heart of the ice shelf.

“Just spit it out!” “Lake Meade.” “Near the Hoover Dam?” I asked. “Where?” Kellen nodded. “Yes. Some of the biggest igneous rock formations in the world are there.” “Where?” “The mountains surrounding Lake Mead are solid igneous rock …” “Which means that there could be caves there.” “And they would be more secluded, since no one knows about them.” “Kellen, you’re a genius!” I repeated myself. “How do you know about this?” “You can’t be a vampire as long as I have been and not learn a few things.” Kellen shrugged. “I studied.”

The gap is big enough to go through inside the icy cavern. We swim through and out the other side. It opens out into a huge pool. The ice looks blue in here, being lit up by the power source this cavern has. We pass into another entrance but I stop hearing a noise. I look around when it gets louder. Like a groaning roar. I look at Artemis when the vibrations in the water ripple and there is a movement below me. I look down and see the glowing yellow eyes of the monster that protects the main entrance.

Moana’s POV The air in the forest was so cold it felt like needles on my skin. I stood in the dark shadows, my back against a large pine tree as my hands shook. They were covered in small scars from years of hard work, because I had spent the whole day cleaning and scrubbing floors at Elder Rodrigo's house.
