It was 9:04 AM. And then, at exactly 9:05 AM, the illusion completely shattered. It started with a single, sharp beep from the main control desk. Davies stopped clapping. He leaned closer to his computer monitor. He typed something quickly, his brow furrowing in confusion. Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound grew louder and faster. Suddenly, the giant server stability screen on the left wall flickered. The bright green numbers froze. A second later, the top corner of the screen turned a bright, angry red.

It made him accustomed to the idea of having those lifeless bodies as his companion on every lonely night. When he finished checking all the areas, he returned to a small room where three monitors were installed. However, only two screens functioned normally. They were the camera at the front door and at the end of the hall. The one installed near the backdoor was broken, leaving the monitor showing nothing but a black screen. It had been a month since he sent a report regarding this broken system. Yet, no one bothered to come and fix it. Picking up the mug next to his right, the man sipped his third cup of coffee and continued to guard the small mortuary, looking at the two working screens

“Yeah. Why?” He leans closer, pointing at one of the monitors. “This one... see the slight flicker? That’s usually voltage fluctuation. Could fry your DVR if you’re not careful.” The Latino straightens. “You serious?” “Hmm.” The doctor taps the metal casing of the monitor thoughtfully. “I’d check the breaker panel. Just in case. Five minutes of downtime is better than losing the whole system.” Five minutes. That’s all they need. The guy curses under his breath. “Damn it. I told maintenance to fix that.”

The wires snap free. For one terrifying second—nothing happens. Then the timer flickers. 00:31 00:30 Marcus exhales. “It’s slowing.” Adrian holds the battery core away from the device.
