Her grip tightened slightly, thinking she’d won.
“We’ll get through it,” I said again, softer.
And when the time comes, I’ll rip out your heart with my bare hand.

Each step I took echoed louder in my skull than on the dirt path beneath me. Rage coiled behind my ribs, feeding on betrayal. But I didn’t let it blind me, I needed to be smarter.
And for that I needed monsters worse than the ones who’d fooled me.
The path narrowed, then split between two trees, leading to the dark, looming fortress of the Night Bane Order. The gate stood tall, guarded by cloaked sentries, as expected.
