He was always a loner and worked late in the evening and night at school.

In the office, Smith couldn't shake off what he had seen earlier from his head. Still smiling. "I've never seen her smile before, and the way she dances…" he said to himself, then caught himself. "No, man. Come off it," he said. "She's not your class or your status. Be focused. She's just a janitor, nothing more," he said to himself again. To distract himself, he turned to his laptop and began typing, the sound of the keyboard filling the quiet office.

Then he sat and let out a low rumble. That's the first time I've seen a monster do that. I'm so used to hearing their growls or their roars. So I assumed they don't make sounds like this. But I was wrong. There's a lot about monsters I have no idea about. They're mysterious creatures. As I watched him, Quip closed his eyes and started panting. Maybe he's finally comfortable and calm? "Excuse me," a man's voice came out of nowhere. I jumped at the sound of it and turned to look at him. The person was actually the janitor, and he had a stern expression on his face. "I heard there was someone here."

"I'm applying for the janitor position." Jian Tong's rough voice solemnly filled the small office and successfully halted the woman's steps. The woman paused, turned around, and with raised eyebrows, looked her up and down again, now suspicious, "It's rare to see someone in their twenties willing to stoop to being a janitor and endure hardship."

"No harm done." He walked past. The janitor froze. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. Then he took a breath and called out, his voice louder than before. "Mr. Blackwood!" Vance turned. Nerissa turned beside him. The janitor was gripping the mop handle so tightly his knuckles were white. He was not looking directly at them. He was looking at the floor, at the bucket, at anything but their faces. "I just..." He swallowed. "Thank you. For the salary increase. For what you did for us."
