She asked as though she had just discovered a new treasure. "No. The bodies they possess die and they move on to other bodies except if they are expelled then they go back to hell". Her eyes widened at my explanation. "It's real?". "very real baby". From the way her eyes knitted together, I knew she wanted to ask more but I'd had enough talks of Zoe. I lifted her from the ground and threw her over my shoulder, striding towards the bedroom. I was going to make her forget Zoe.

But I want it to be. The transformed body is quick, quick and loud and alive and real and strong and uncontrollable and fast and real and more than I want to be, more than I should be, more than I am supposed to be. My body is and it fills the world like it is the world, like it is the night, like it is the air, like it is the forest. The strength is a shock, a shock that I can’t contain, can’t contain and can’t cover with my humanity, with the fragile parts of my humanity.

My thighs have become weapons-grade misery. Even my fingers somehow hurt. River listens patiently while I describe all my injuries in graphic detail, his mouth twitching every few seconds like he's trying not to laugh. "The physical part matters," he says eventually, his thumbs pressing into another knot buried deep beneath my shoulder blade. "The mental more so. Your wolf isn't separate from your body. People like to talk about shifting like it's magic, but it isn't. It's biological. Your muscles, bones, organs, heart. Everything changes."

She was ancient and failing and her back hurt and her knee still wasn't right and the void was up there somewhere beyond perception and she had maybe six months in this body and possibly less. "We lost most of ourselves," she said. Loud enough. "Bodies are failing. Void's still up there. No food systems, no medicine, no shelter." She paused. "We've been almost this bad off before." Somewhere in the crowd someone laughed. Then another person. Then the whole ridiculous mass of them, forty thousand survivors of ten billion, laughing in the dark of a forest that had grown enormous without them. It wasn't funny. It was the only possible response.

“At best?” “Yeah, you heard me.” “Um, okay, then what’s the worst that could happen?” Surely, nothing can be worse than death. “They’ll make sure I never make it back.” He notices the confused look on my face. “Imagine my body is here, my soul is here, but I’m not here. It’s like I’m dead without truly being dead. Like I’m comatose. You can’t kill my physical body because you don’t know if and when I’ll come back, and if you do, then I’m never making it back because I have no body to return to.” Just the thought has my heart racing and my palms turning clammy.

I wasn’t alone in my own body… What did that even mean? A parasite of some sort? An entity? Some sort of magic? Or was it somehow even worse?
