CHAPTER 2 310 days before my life was caught short. The morning after my poetry notebook reappeared, I skipped breakfast. Gloria was already halfway through a rant about utility bills and my missing laundry, but her voice sounded distant, like I was listening through water. I slipped on my uniform, stuffed the mysterious notebook deep into my backpack, and left the house before she could ask why I looked like I hadn’t slept. Because I hadn’t. Again.

Inside was almost nothing. A phone, powered off, that Marcus immediately bagged for his tech team. A half-empty water bottle. And a small spiral notebook, worn soft at the corners, the kind of thing someone carries for years without meaning to. I flipped through it carefully. Most of the pages were mundane—grocery lists, gas mileage, nothing that told us anything. But near the back, tucked between two blank pages like it had been added separately from the rest of the notebook, was a single line in different handwriting than the rest of the notebook.

The morning light fully cleared the eastern peaks, pouring in broad, golden shafts through the cabin windows and banishing the last lingering shadows of dawn. Across the wooden table, the heavy parchment rolls lay unfurled, covered in the dark, precise ink lines of Marcus's ledger entries and Nora's structural annotations.

The notebook is a cheap spiral-bound thing I bought in a stationery shop in Brooklyn three weeks ago, before I knew what I was packing for. The cover is blue cardboard, already soft at the corners. Inside are eleven days of transcriptions, every deed and manifest and shipping record I have translated, every note I have made in the margins, every photograph reference I have logged. The pages are filled with my handwriting, small and precise, the handwriting of someone who learned early that words left room are words that can be used against you.

Except someone had been passing through it repeatedly and with purpose for three weeks. I moved through the trees with the Switch fully engaged, slow and deliberate, footfalls on stone where I could find it and packed earth where I couldn't, each step placed before my weight committed to it. The morning mist sat low between the trunks, the kind of mist that arrived in early autumn and stayed until midmorning, softening the edges of things, making the forest feel like a room someone had left the lights off in. Good cover. I noted it as I noted everything, filed it in the column marked useful and kept moving.

He didn't like the idea of eating naked. Tiffany was finishing making their turkey sandwiches in the kitchen. On the table was her purple covered, spiral notebook. Ben noticed it was different from the one they normally used. He sat and opened the cover. In it, he saw his mom's perfect handwriting. Several titles were underlined with what appeared to be summaries under them. She had at least ten outlines. As he was about to read the first, the notebook was quickly snatched from his hands and carried to the other side of the table.

Ronnie’s POV The next morning arrived far too quickly. I barely noticed it. The curtains were still half drawn, allowing the sunlight to spill into the suite, yet I had woken up long before the sun even decided to show itself. My laptop sat open in front of me. Three notebooks were scattered across the table. Printed documents covered almost every available surface. They were evidence. Or at least what I hoped would become evidence. Because right now? Everything still looked like a complete mess.

The smallest things survived the longest. The forget-me-not rested in the center of Mara's palm, impossibly delicate after nearly three decades hidden beneath the pages of Arthur's notebook. Its petals had faded from vibrant blue to a muted grayish violet, yet the shape remained almost perfect. Whoever had pressed it between those pages had done so carefully, protecting it from light, moisture and time. Arthur had preserved thousands of documents inside the archive, but something about that tiny flower affected the room in a way ledgers and trust deeds never could.

And because it was still early, Ara first thought of going through the university bookstore right inside their campus. She really planned on buying a ballpen. But when she got to the shelf of notebooks, a green notebook quickly grabbed the young lady's attention. It was a thick and hardcover, a planner type. When she opened it she saw how beautiful its paper. Ara suddenly thought of Daniel then she smiled meaningfully. That was all and she did not hesitate to buy it. ***** "GOOD morning!" Jason greeted her warmly when she met her friend who was on duty at the library's baggage counter.
