It was like something was missing, like I was missing something. Her voice trembled as she whispered, "I'm cold..." The words cut through the air, and I felt a stab in my chest. "Mother, open the door, I'm here. I'm freezing," she pleaded, her teeth chattering as she folded her arms around herself, shivering uncontrollably. I quickly grabbed a hot towel and gently wrapped it around her arms, trying to warm her up. But she continued to whimper, her body shaking with cold. “Mother, open the door for me. Am in here,” Her tears flowing while her eyes were shut.

I'M A CHILD again, cowering, shaking like a leaf as I step down the stairs and face my tormentors. "Oh, honey!" With a loud sob, she walks towards me and gathers me in an embrace. My confusion is out of the world as I stand still like a statue and have my mother break down in my arms. A mother's embrace is like the warmest of sheets on a gloomy, cold night acting like a shield that gives you the safety that nothing cruel could ever touch you but for me, she's that cruel thing.

Some part of me telling me that it has something to do with this coldness. Then l heard mum cough down stairs.l rushed to see what happened to her .That's when it hit me hard that the frost is every where around our house.lt was the freezing temperature that made mum uncomfortable. Chloe crept closer, her heart swelling as she reached out to touch her mother’s arm, the warmth of the gesture brimming with affection. “Mom,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, “I’m taking you to a beautiful new place. I know you’ve been worried about me, but trust me, I’m doing really well now. This is just a step for you to get stronger so you can join me in the penthouse. You wouldn’t believe all that I’ve accomplished. It’s going to be amazing when you’re finally there with me.” As she spoke, she felt it, a sudden, sharp grip. Her mother’s frail fingers had latched onto her wrist, startlingly strong. Her eyes remained closed, but her mouth began to move.

Just walked out and left me alone with my sleeping brother. I moved my chair closer to the bed and reached out to touch his forehead. The fever was gone, but his skin was still warm. Human warm, not the burning heat from before. "I won't let her hurt you anymore," I whispered to his sleeping form. "I promise." But even as I said it, I knew it was a promise I might not be able to keep. Mother was like a storm system. She gathered power as she moved, and everything in her path got swept up or destroyed.

Just me and the tiny life growing inside me. A warm blanket settled across my shoulders. I opened my eyes. Damien. Of course. I hadn’t even noticed him leave the room. “You were cold.” The explanation was simple, matter of fact, as though draping blankets over me was completely normal. Maybe for him it was becoming normal. The realization did something strange to my chest—something warm, something dangerous. Across the room, my mother watched the interaction quietly. A look crossed her face. Not disapproval. Not concern. Something closer to understanding. I looked away first. That felt safer.

She whispered taking ponderous steps towards me. I watched her with quivering lips as she sat beside me on the bed. "How are you feeling now? I came as soon as I heard that you had regained consciousness" mother asked, her tone tingling with warmth and empathy. I watched her with heavy orbs trail her fingers towards my cheeks in a bid to caress them. "Oh mother" I immediately threw myself on her shoulders, weeping so fervently on her. Mother embraced me, her touch enveloping my frail figure and softly caressing my back.
