Her eyes shifted to mine as if she knew I was preparing a rebuttal. “Well, that is barbaric and unfair,” I pouted. “Love is complicated, my dear,” my mother frowned. “Why can’t we just love whomever we want?” I asked. “McKenna, you are right. Let me get you some warm milk to calm you,” she offered. “Noooo, finish the story, mama. Please,” I begged again. "Of course, my dear," she nodded. I watched her fetch fresh milk and place it in the round steel to warm it. She did not bother asking again if I would like any. My mother settled back down and continued with her recollection of the story from the beginning of time.

Chapter 16: Vesta’s POV “I don’t understand! I just can’t get it right,” I whined as I slumped onto the couch on the left side of the room, piled high with clothes. My mother sighed, a small, knowing smile on her face as she reached for me. Her touch was gentle as she cupped my cheek. “You need to be patient, Vesta.” “But I am,” I retorted. “No. You are far from being patient.”

she greets with a trembling voice. "Hello ," My mother replies with an affectionate smile. " You can come closer. Don't be shy ," my mother stretches her hands for a hug . Rue walks over to her silently and reaches out for her . I don't know how my mother does it but Rue suddenly starts crying in her arms .Her tiny body convulses and her shoulders shake as she sobs loudly . I stand awkwardly watching the sad scene unfold in front of me . I don't know how to react so I just watch mum rubbing her back soothingly.

mom whispers, her voice filled with warmth and affection as she carefully places the child in my arms. At first, I hesitate, my mind racing with doubts and fears that I’ll never have any form of attachment with the child. But as I look down at his peaceful face, a surge of motherly affection floods through me, overwhelming my doubts with a fierce sense of love and protectiveness. To my delight, I find myself unable to tear my gaze away from the child, my heart swelling with a sense of wonder at the miracle of his existence. And as I feel his warm body nestled against my own, I know with a certainty that I’m meant to be his mother.

Winter's POV "Explain." I stare at my mother. She stares right back. The problem isn't that I don't know what she's asking. The problem is that I know exactly what she's asking. The room feels entirely too warm all of a sudden. I look toward the window. The window offers no assistance. I look at the fireplace. The fireplace is equally useless. When I glance back, Mother is still waiting. Patiently. Terrifyingly. "That's a very broad request."

The word came out like venom, bitter and burning on my tongue. My mother rose from her seat by the window, her silk skirts rustling as she quickly walked across the room toward me, her arms extended in a gesture of comfort I couldn't bear to accept. Her face was soft with maternal concern, her eyes glistening with unshed tears for my pain. "Celia, darling, listen to your father…" She reached out, trying to touch my trembling shoulder, her fingers gentle and warm, but I violently smacked her hand away.

I held her cold hands and began to rub mine against hers, while blowing hot air at it. "Bring woods and warm water!" I ordered Chloe who stood in shock at the sight before us, without blinking, without moving. She just stood still, gazing at my mum's face, almost as still as a statue if her hands were shaking. It was as if her eyes were trying to say something when she stared at me, and I did get the message. Warm water and burning woods will not return warmth to her skin. This realization tore something within me.

Meera~ I curled my body and clutched the blanket as warmth seeped inside me, giving me all the comfort in this world. Suddenly, I felt someone caressing my forehead. The warm fingers felt good and comforting. Is this Mama? Did she come here because I got sick, just like old times? "Meera," I heard the familiar voice, but it didn't belong to Mama. Frowning and groaning, I opened my eyes, only to meet the brown eyes of Abram's grandmother.

“Alright. I get it. I’ll wait here until you call for me.” I nodded my head and let out a deep breath before opening the door. My mom was there, excitedly sitting down on the bed. Once I entered the room, she turned her head in excitement and smiled brightly. “Maia,” she opened her arms for me. “Mom,” I said and went into her arms. For a while, I only felt my mom’s cold and thin arms around me. For some strange reason, I felt warm in her embrace, although she was very cold. I also noticed that her wrists were thinner, so I wrapped my hands around them.

Chapter 5 – Mother’s Darkness Mother sat in her favorite armchair, the soft afternoon light filtering through the lace curtains. The house was quiet, too quiet, each corner echoing memories of laughter, arguments, and whispered secrets. Yet now, the silence was heavy, pressing down on her chest. Her once vibrant energy, the pillar that had held the family together through loss and hardship, was eroding under the weight of depression.
