Warmth spread through my chest and the fire in my hand steadied. My mother nodded. “Good.” The colors of the flames changed from violent orange into rich gold. It was beautiful to see. “That’s different.” I said. “Because your emotions changed.” The soft fire floated higher above my palm, swirling slowly. “Now think about him.” my mother said. The moment I thought of Rodney, the fire changed. Heat burst through the chamber, hitting the walls hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling. I gasped, staring at the flames that had suddenly got out of control.

My heartbeat echoed in my ears. 'Fire, come to me,' I whispered in my mind. At first, nothing happened. Then a warmth spread through my chest, pulsing outward like a second heartbeat. My fingers tingled. “Good,” Mother said softly. “Now, let it flow to your hand.” I lifted my hand, and to my shock, a flicker of flame danced across my palm. My eyes flew open. “By the Moon—!” I gasped, nearly dropping it. The flame sputtered, then shot up higher.

“That’s my girl. Remember, I am with you, always. In every breath, in every heartbeat, I am with you. Now, you must brace yourself. Because you must remember, no matter how painful, every detail and every word.” I nodded. With that, my mother planted a long kiss on my forehead. It felt like everything warm and comforting in a single moment, as if the essence of her love was seeping into my very soul. I closed my eyes, savoring the sensation, wishing I could hold onto it forever. But even as the warmth spread through me, I could feel the world around us beginning to shift, the edges of this realm growing thin, translucent. My mother must way nothing more than a feather. It’s shocking to see her hip bones protrude through her jean clad legs, and how her rib cage shows through her halter top. Damn she must be cold; I mean it’s fall right now and we don’t exactly have the cash for round the clock heating.

The doctor made a little excuse from the room, when he saw their eyes lock for so long, he knew what was about to occur. If I had ever thought of being the one who gave father the attention he so craved that day, then I would have been as well deceiving myself. The door was hardly shut behind the doctor, when mother rushed straight into her lover's open arms and they were soon teleported to paradise. I knew how warm it was to be in father's arms, and also knew how comforting mother's breast pressed against my head made me comfortable. But I had never thought of the combination of the two - comfort plus warmth, it would be a real place to be.

“We’re going to need it come winter.” “More than that.” Father admitted worriedly. We both looked at him. “Don’t worry, My Girls.” He strung sheltering arms around us and guided us toward the fire. “Let’s warm up.” I felt comforted by the heat of the flame in our Main Room and soon I found myself resting my head on mother’s lap. Feeling her reassuring hand stroking my hair. Though I was now a woman grown, I still found her touch vastly reassuring. And I felt small and vulnerable, and her touch took all that away. Seeing my father so close, staring into the dancing flames, comforted me.

But there are times when Accashia wished that it was not true. Accashia’s lips trembled and the long sword slipped from her fingers. “Mother…” She whispered. “Mama.” Again and again until tears welled in her eyes and she ran. “Mama!” And oddly enough, the woman hugs her back. Even though she smelled like the dead of corpses and rats. The woman was still warm. How it is that she's warm. The dead shouldn't be warm like this, and Accashia had always dreamed of feeling her warm embrace again. “Mama…” She cried in her mother’s arms. “You’re alive, and you're here.”

Unlike in Chaira's second life where she is still slightly affected after being given the chance to live and start over again, it seemed, her heart was already so numb she didn't even feel anything when her own biological mother stared at her with malicious eyes. The familiar warmth and care that should be present in every mom's eye when looking at their child, were nowhere to be seen. Maybe that's the reason why she doesn't care about it anymore..
