I spun out my bed and scrambled my way to the study, mother was hiding something and I really need to figure out. Lightning and thunder ravaged through the hallway windows casting the shadows of the trees through the wall. The study was a big space filled with brown shelves and filled with books, getting one for Violet wouldn’t be a bad idea. I strolled round the library in the study and my attention trapped the very first edition of paurnima curse, a book papa got for mother when she found out about the clan. My clean nails studied the hardness of the brown books which dated from centuries with its italic words scribble against every page.

I smiled as he nodded again, his brown hair bouncing around as he leaned in a little closer. I opened the book and started flipping through the pages, looking for a good story or myth to read to him. I paused for a moment at the title page that read ‘The All Mother and the Sacred Four’, tilting the book towards Calix. He smiled and scooted closer, nodding again as I turned the final page and cleared my throat.

It hadn't been touched in a while because it looked brand new though very dusty. I opened it and cold wind blew gushed through my face. It was as strong and cold as the first wind. I turned back to the cover of the page to check for anything but it was blank black. Only golden stripes at the spine of the book didn't make it completely dull. I placed my finger on the book to swipe the pages but the book took control and swiped the page by itself, leading me to a page I would have least expected it to be. 'The joy of a mother'

Standing on my tiptoes, I carefully pull the book off the shelf and slide down onto the chair. My fingers run over the cover of the book before I open it. Carefully I open the book and flip to the first page. There she is, a picture of my mother. Standing with her thumbs hooked into the pockets of her jeans, my mother smiles up from the image. Her long blonde hair blows in the wind, and her green eyes twinkle at whoever took the picture. Suddenly, I hear footsteps coming up the hallway, and I know that I have been caught. Madison storms into the bedroom with a look of rage in her eyes.

I stopped breathing altogether. “I know this book.” I glanced up at Caius, unease seeping into my voice. “My mother used to read this to me every night. It drove her crazy for a while. This can’t be the same one. She didn’t start reading this to me until I was eight.” A laugh left me. “I even bit the pages when I was angry—” My hands shook as I picked it up. A small, distinct groove along the edge of the pages caught my eye.

I found a book with black pages, unlike the usual books he had with lines where he wrote in. Curiously, I turned through the pages and found a drawing of a girl. She had black hair, a cute smile and she wore a beautiful flower dress and she was sitting by the river, her fingers over a broken piano. And upon closer look I realized it was me, she had the same violet eyes like I did. My mother had called them ugly I had believed her but as I looked down at the drawing of me, I realized it wasn't ugly at all. She was beautiful.

She still didn’t know that Liam was my mate and according to my calculations and the fact that I had already met Liam, my heat was imminent. I decided to take the book of spells and read it while in the lounge. My mother wasn’t going to be home anytime soon so there was no need for me to read it while hiding. I browsed through the old worn out pages until I reached a torn out page. The bottom of the page was torn out and only the top remained, reading the subheading was torturous for me

Though, the coldness remained right there in her golden eyes as if now reinforced by steel. "My mother's book. Where is it?" She said impassively, expression extremely stoic I nearly flinched. She narrowed her eyes at me and I looked around me and retrieved the teal notebook. I handed it to her. She snatched it quickly and caressed its back. I had tried going through the book but I could not understand a damn thing that was written in it. I didn't recognize the language. She seemed to understand it just fine for her eyes were glued to it again, like always.

The pages yellowed with age. Yet the moment Aruna touched it— She knew. Without question. Without doubt. It belonged to Elena. A familiar scent lingered within the pages. Old paper. Lavender. The faint perfume her mother used to wear. Aruna's chest tightened. For a moment she wasn't standing beneath The House. She was a little girl again. Sitting beside her mother. Listening to bedtime stories. Watching her smile. Watching her laugh. Missing her. Every single day. With shaking fingers, she opened the notebook.

I set them aside for later. Then I reached deeper into the bag and pulled out the books I hadn’t recognized. Several of them were small, leather-bound volumes. Journals. I flipped open the first one and saw pages filled with my mother’s neat handwriting. My breath caught. I closed it gently and placed the journals beside my bed. I would read them later.
