“It came up.” I smacked his arm, pretending to pout. “You can’t keep a secret to save your life!” “True,” he said, smiling. “But I can keep you.” Eva’s laughter filled the room again, brighter, freer this time. My mother was smiling too, her face soft with relief. For the first time in months, warmth seeped back into the house — into my life. But deep down, a whisper lingered: Would this warmth last, or was it just another borrowed moment before the cold returned?

I try to bite my lip and keep smiling until he disappears behind the door. I thought I was strong, but I'm not. Even before the door closes tightly, my tears burst forth uncontrollably. The three women I cherish appear and look at me sadly. I cry, sobbing in their embrace. "Mother..." I reach out to my mother's body tightly, begging for her energy so I can endure. Mamma hugs me from behind. Her hands feel like they're stroking my arms, as if she's trying to send her positive energy to me.

I tried to reach out, but she flinched. “I’m not here to hurt you,” I said gently. “I’m here to warm you.” “There’s no warmth left,” she sobbed. “She's gone. All that's left is anger and bitterness.” I sat beside her and summoned my inner fire. Not to burn, not to fight but to soothe.

I hated myself for feeling this way, but I couldn't help it. Lost in my thoughts, a sudden gentle knock disrupted my peaceful reverie, causing me to glance up at the door without standing up. My heart skipped a beat as I saw someone standing in the doorway other than my mother. She wore a black dress and coat, her eyes shining with a warm smile as she gazed at me. Despite the unexpected interruption, I couldn't help but feel a sense of comfort and security knowing that my mother was here as if everything would be okay now that she had entered the room. "Hey," Mom said with a sweet smile as she sat down on the bed, patting my head like I was still her baby boy. I couldn't help but smile back

“You won’t have to.” When he left, Cassie found her mother standing by the window, arms folded, and watching the night. She hesitated, then slipped her hand into Victoria’s. Her mother squeezed it gently. She had her mother back. The apartment felt warmer than it had in weeks.
