My mother shook her head, but she was smiling now. Really smiling. The sight of it warmed something inside me. Queen Elaine, my mother, who had carried pain and secrets and years of separation, stood in my father’s private chamber smiling because he had reduced war instruction to kick arse. It should not have made me feel safe. It did anyway.
Tobias stepped closer and tapped two fingers lightly against the centre of my chest, just above where Seraphina’s heat lived. “Now that we are bonded, you can also draw from my strength if needed,” Tobias said. The laughter faded from my lips. “What?” I asked.
