They say... someone died." "What?" Julia trembled violently. "Say that again?" "The police said the person who died was likely Mr. Hale."

There was a loud rumble of thunder outside, and Ian’s voice sounded exceptionally low under the sudden thunderclap. Looking at his red eyes, I felt bitterness in my heart. Just as I was about to speak, a rapid knock on the door interrupted me. "Ahh! Ahh! Ian, save me!" Ian's expression changed slightly, and he immediately released me to open the door. Ruby weakly threw herself into his arms, her palm-sized face full of panic. "My thoughts drifted back to that night again. Please keep me company. I'm so scared..."

The sound of children playing in the courtyard drifted through the open doors, thin and bright against the weight in the room. Cowrie exhaled slowly. “I thought I was past this,” she said, her voice low. “I thought I could face loss like it was part of life. But I still wake up reaching for it.” Micah moved then. He came around the table and placed his hands on her shoulders. He didn’t speak, only pressed his forehead to hers. The way she leaned into him said everything. Solenne’s eyes filled, but her smile held. “You’re allowed to mourn,” she said gently. “That’s the part we never tell each other enough.”

"Why are you crying?" I looked up at a clean, youthful face and cried even harder. "My mom is in there, but I can't see her." The young Adrian froze for a moment, then burst out laughing. "What's there to cry about?" He clapped his hands, squatted down in front of me, his voice bright. "Get on." Later, I climbed into the coffin and clutched my mother's cold body, crying until I was hoarse. The sound of my sobs drew everyone's attention, and Adrian was beaten severely by his father. Even with his face bruised and swollen, he still flashed me a reckless smile.

There was no sound from the other end of the line. Just as I assumed someone had dialed the wrong number and was about to hang up, a familiar yet distant voice finally spoke: "Is this… Elio…?" The voice was both familiar and like a distant memory, and I immediately realized it was Serena. "Serena?" I didn't expect Serena to suddenly call me. "Please don't hang up yet… I just want to say a few words to you before I die… "The doctors say I have cancer, Elio… It's terminal."

“Mmmmm—mummy” She croaks as I race to her side, I land on my knees beside her and I pull on all my power, pushing the wound closed I heal her, my power fills her up as she gasps for breath, but just as I thought she could breathe her body gives out and she collapses, her heart stops and her eyes lay open Abby screams, falling on her backside and crawling back away from her as she sobs shaking her head “Noooooo” Lou falls on the ground sobbing into her hands, shaking back and forth. Everyone just stands in shock, such a bittersweet moment, the moment we had all been waiting for was finally over but along with that goes the pain of losing someone we now considered family.
