Shattered promises
Alina darted to the terminal Lucas had set up, trying to access the fragments remotely.
Lara, despite fear and fatigue, provided cover, hurling debris and striking at any assailant who approached. The wind whipped through the rooftop, carrying the distant sounds of the city below.
“Alina!” Nathan shouted. “They’re adaptive! Move faster!”
She typed frantically, sweat dripping down her temples. Sparks flew as the fragments responded, blinking with a light that seemed almost alive.
Lucas lunged at Nathan, knocking him back. Nathan rolled, coming up behind him, delivering a crushing blow to Lucas’ side. But as he turned, Alina’s scream split the air.
