Once Upon a Tryst

Once Upon a Tryst

So often I felt like I was walking around in a fog, waiting to start living. Until Arthur, that is. He makes me feel like I’m really alive, like I’ve fallen into one of those stories. The problem is, not all fairytales have happy endings. In fact, most of the early tales were quite gruesome morality tales designed to warn and scare. They were never meant to be a guide for how to live your life. I take a sharp right turn down a long corridor of books. I know my way by heart and soon find my favorite bench, near a window, with all my favorite books. Today didn’t feel like a fairy tale day. I feel like fantasy has failed me.

How she thinks she's only pregnant with one baby, but is going to give birth to four. The last one is Cerulean's responsibility to tell her, not mine!

"Don't—don't bring that up. Giacomo made me." She dropped, sobbing. "He had dirt on me. I didn't have a choice!" Her voice cracked. "Those two years I handled the books, I stole. Jewelry. A whole crate. That Patek Philippe. Eight hundred grand.

Her Fairytale Ending

Her Fairytale Ending

But my mind couldn’t think of another explanation. I was starting to get the idea that the woman at the bar may have been for real. But what was she? Some sort of witch or deamon? She definitely was not the Fairy God Mother from my childhood movies. But it seemed to fit. Ariel lost her voice when she made a deal with the sea witch, and Cinderella did have a Fairy God Mother. All I needed now was a poisonous apple and a beast.

I still get a little giddy when I think about how fractured fairy tales yank those old tropes into the present and give them new teeth.

What really hooks me is how they flip the hero-villain script: villains get backstories, heroes get flaws, and the whole idea of honor and destiny gets interrogated. Stories like 'Wicked' or the sly humor of 'Shrek' pull apart the fairy-tale scaffolding—no more cardboard-perfect princes or helpless princesses. Instead you get messy people, moral gray areas, and motives that actually make sense in a modern world.

On top of that, these retellings stitch in contemporary issues—gender, class, race, consent, trauma—so the fairy-tale lesson isn’t about obedience but about agency and empathy. I love seeing traditional motifs reimagined—wolves as victims, witches as midwives or activists, enchanted objects as metaphor for tech or addiction. It feels less like nostalgia and more like a conversation with the past, which is exactly why these versions stick with me longer than their original templates.
