My skin burned where the fibers rubbed raw, but the pain was the least of it, it was the helplessness that threatened to swallow me. Darren paced in my front like a predator, calm, precise, and deliberate. Every step of his boots on the wooden floor echoed through the room, blending with the frantic thud of my heartbeat. Elara stood near the window, still rolling that vial between her fingers, the faint glimmer of the liquid inside catching the candlelight. It looked harmless, almost beautiful, the way poison often does before it kills you. “So,” Darren said finally, breaking the silence, “you found the book.”

“Damien will destroy you.” Carl’s eyes gleamed with dark satisfaction. “Maybe. But he’ll be too late to save you.” In a flash, Carl’s hand shot up, a hidden blade gleaming in the moonlight. Mrs. Lauren’s eyes widened in shock, but it was too late. The blade plunged into her side, the cold steel biting deep into her flesh. “No!” Elena screamed from her hiding place, her voice filled with horror. Mrs. Lauren gasped, her body shuddering as the pain seared through her. But even as her strength began to fade, she refused to back down. With one last surge of power, she pushed Carl away, sending him crashing into a tree.

Greying hair was cut short on either side of his head and his face was handsome. I hadn’t realised he was handsome before and he didn’t look as old as I was told. There had only been one photo I had seen and they didn’t really look like the same person. Only I knew they were. This was Elio. Crime boss, murderer, future husband if my stupid brother got his way. One deep breath , and then another and my finger curled around the trigger. I was going to kill the man in the hotel room across from me, and when I was done I was going to fucking kill my brother for putting me in this situation to begin with.

Jack let the force of his legs explode through his hips, torso, and shoulders, sent the energy through his arms and into the bag. Only when he was completely spent, covered in sweat, did he let himself drop to the mat. But even then, he couldn’t rest. He reached for his phone and shuffled through the photos he’d taken of Ashley’s bizarre paintings. He paused the screen at the painting of himself in the grave, eyes open but unseeing. Blackwell’s other known victims hadn’t been buried alive. They’d been buried in pieces. The FBI had never done a full recovery. The bastard was keeping trophies.

“I want to know about myself… as much as you can tell.” Maribeth sat up straight for a moment, then got up from her chair and walked over to the bookshelf against the wall. She picked up a small book with a black cover and brought it to Elora. Maribeth slid the book across the table. “This book was with you when you came. You hugged it tightly, even screamed hysterically when the police took this book as evidence.” Elora’s hand shook as she tried to hold the book. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?” whispered Elora. She fixed her eyes on it, and a strange feeling filled her memory.

There were two things that she knew for sure—that the girls’ bodies had ended up in Mrs. Schneider’s fortress of a backyard, and that the person (monster?) had touched her bike seat with his (its?) bloody hand. Only then, Landon, Jasper, and that Taylor bitch would live in grief and remorse forever!" Zoe felt sick in the stomach when she listened to Betty's gory description.
