The Hunter and the Vampire
The walls closed in around me, vampires and humans jostling one around, teeth bared, every pair of eyes fixed on me.
I could make out some faces: the red-gold eyes of the vampire who had torn apart my neck and crushed the bones in my left hand; Ben, shaking his head, his face pale with blood loss; even my Dad, eyes cold and empty, his mouth in a firm, disapproving line as he watched the vampires swarm. And beside him stood Harper, mouthing the words: "You did this to me."
Between them all was Cyrus’s Nanny, her hand raising in a feeble attempt to sooth him. But Cyrus was not there, and her weak hand clattered to the floor, her mouth open in a hollow, soundless scream.
