I was yanked again, this time into darkness. Then, I stood in a courtyard I recognized. The palace courtyard. Snow fell around me, thick and cold. My chest tightened. “No,” I whispered. “wait.” Future me knelt and placed her hand on the coffin lid. Her voice cracked, barely a whisper: “I’m sorry… I couldn’t save you.”

I have never thought about a future like that before, but now it seemed like the only future I could imagine. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this was the future I wanted.
