Someone must have dropped it while they were climbing the stairs, she stared down at it, it was a very beautiful book. She bent slightly to pick it up. "Valentine's Day." She pronounced the name on the book, and flipped through it's pages, she would give it to the receptionist. "Erm, what is Valentina?" She heard Ethan's voice and she hid the book behind her back before she turned towards him. "Do you mind joining me for tea in the evening?" He searched through his breast pockets for and brought out a black card. "After your interview show this to the instructor, she would let you come to me." He stretched the card to her with a small smile on his face. "Be rest assured, it's just tea."

She was way too excited with this while I was ready for a nap. “Lumia.” “Beautiful name.” Her eyes flicked up to mine and it felt as if she was able to look straight into my soul. As she selected one card, Strength, explaining something about kindness and tolerance being needed to guide my chariot, I almost nodded off. I must have reacted badly because Melissa punched me in the arm. The second card was a little happier. Lovers. Yeah. Maybe Melissa would get her wish after all. She’d been bugging me for weeks to find a hunky older man and have sweaty, rough, and filthy sex.

I knew she did by the way her shoulders tensed, the way her eyes darted to me and then away again. She didn’t thank me. Didn’t need to. That wasn’t why I did it.

When he returned, he was clutching something behind his back, his face serious. “Adrian,” he said softly, walking up to me. I crouched down so we were eye level. “What’s up, buddy?” He held out a small handmade card, the edges slightly uneven and smudged with crayon. On the front, there was a drawing of three stick figures holding hands, a taller one with dark hair, another with lighter hair, and a small one in the middle. My throat tightened as I opened it. Inside, in shaky, careful letters, were the words: Thank you for choosing me.

I opened it and pulled out one of them— cream-colored cards on which the letters glimmered in gold foil: “Selene & Kade Valen” For a second, I couldn’t breathe as my thumb brushed over the printed words. This damn lie that was going to happen between us. My vision blurred with the kind of ache that made my breathing worse and I closed the box instantly, “I need some air,” I stood up abruptly and left the room. Selene followed behind, sliding her arm through mine just as the boutique doors opened. “Mr Valen! Miss Selene!” A crowd of photographers’ voices cut through the moment we walked out that door.

Now, Valentine was in pain, but even in agony as blood noticeably seeped out of the drilling point of Hercules’ teeth, he wouldn’t back down. Suddenly, Valentine led with his right hand, held into a somewhat grappling hook as he reached for Hercules’ throat and got a hold of it. He slowly raised Hercules from the floor but not as willingly as one might expect from the level of exhaustion the Alpha he had incured. Hercules saw to the opening that presented itself in Valentine’s thinking he had become all out of steam to continue. “Gree!” He growled as he scratched even more from the wound he had rendered Valentine.

He pulled a packet of greeting cards from the bottom drawer. “Why did she save all these cards? It’s not like her,” he said and began to look through them. “They’re all from my dad!” he exclaimed. “There are birthday cards and anniversary cards and Christmas cards and Valentine’s Day cards.” Victor’s voice was full of confusion. “I can’t believe this.” I walked to his side to see what was puzzling him about greeting cards. I looked through a few of the cards and saw they were all signed, “With all my love, Harry.”
